The national rule
Key Club International's board policy defines a service hour as “any hour of service performed by an individual Key Club member with the approval of their club's board of directors.” The bylaws set no minimum for members, so each club sets its own. Key Club International's guide for district administrators adds that every member should be willing to do at least 50 service hours a year.
Who can join
Key Club is a student-led service organization for high school students, sponsored by local Kiwanis clubs, in 45 countries. Each club pays Key Club International $10 a year per member, plus district dues of no more than that, and your club may charge more to cover its own costs. A school without a club can start one with a sponsor, usually a Kiwanis club, a faculty advisor and at least 11 students.
What real chapters ask
From chapter pages we checked in October 2026. Yours may ask for something else: your chapter's own rules are the ones that count, so ask your adviser for them in writing.
| Chapter | What it asks |
|---|---|
| Northside High School (North Carolina) | 20 hours of club service in 2026-27 and the $20 fee, to be inducted and to receive a cord at graduation. |
| Pelham High School (Alabama) | At least one meeting a month, half of the club’s service projects and 20 hours of individual community service. |
What counts as service
The New England District of Key Club spells the definition out. Counts: service projects that help the school or community, and fundraisers that benefit a charity. Does not count: club and board meetings or district and international events (except time spent on a service project there), administrative work such as planning and recruiting, and fundraisers for the club itself.
Clubs differ on service you do on your own. That district says hours you volunteer individually with another organization should not count for Key Club, while Pelham asks for 20 hours of individual community service. Ask your club before you count outside hours.
How to record your hours
Log each project with the date and hours and turn it in the way your club asks, often an online form or a membership log; your club secretary reports the club's hours to the district. Keep your own copy, since the same hours may also count toward a graduation requirement or a scholarship.
Keep your own record, free
Your chapter's form is the official record; keep your own copy too, with the date, the hours and who supervised you. Print the free volunteer hours log, give supervisors a verification letter to sign, or track it in My Award Tracker: pick the My school or club requirement goal, enter your chapter's number and see the hours left and the weekly pace you need.
