Hours since freshman year
342h
Hours you can't rebuild later
Applications ask for dates, hours and someone who can confirm each experience, often years after you did it.
Medical school (AMCAS)
Each experience needs start and end dates, the hours you completed, a contact person who can verify it and a description of 700 characters or fewer. You can list up to 15, and mark three as most meaningful for 1,325 more characters each.
Pre-med hours guide →PA school (CASPA)
Programs set their own patient care rules. The University of Florida asks for at least 1,000 hours of direct patient care, paid or volunteer; Eastern Michigan does not count volunteer work at all. Log each hour with its type.
PA patient care hours guide →Service and chapters
Greek chapters, honors programs, service-learning courses and scholarships ask for hours too. Set the number as a goal and see the pace you need each week.
How to track volunteer hours →Know where you stand, every week
West Virginia University's pre-health advisers suggest 100 hours each of healthcare experience, research, community service and leadership as a good goal. Start with that, or set your own.
Healthcare experience
Scribe, EMT, CNA or hospital volunteer shifts, and every clinician you shadow, with dates and hours.
Track 100 hours →Research
Lab or clinical research hours each term, with your mentor as the contact who can confirm them.
Track 100 hours →Community service
Non-clinical volunteering and service-learning, the hours schools want to see beyond the hospital.
Track 100 hours →Leadership
Officer roles, teaching and mentoring, with the hours you put in each semester.
Track 100 hours →Activities have their own categories for clinical experience, shadowing and research, so each hour lands in the right goal. Shadowing counts toward healthcare experience here, as WVU suggests; some programs list it separately, so check each school.
Before you start
Can I count hours from high school?
Not on professional school applications: pre-health advisers such as West Virginia University’s say only hours after high school belong there. Log from your first semester.
How many shadowing or clinical hours do I need?
There is no official minimum for medical school. Johns Hopkins advising says there is no “magic” number, and West Virginia University advising suggests 100 hours each of healthcare experience, research, community service and leadership as a good goal. PA programs set their own minimums, such as 1,000 hours of direct patient care at the University of Florida.
Who confirms my hours?
Your supervisor or mentor gets a one-click email and confirms the hours; your record shows who confirmed each entry and when. AMCAS asks for a contact person for every experience, so keep their name and email with each entry.
Is it free?
Logging hours and goals is free. Every new account gets every feature free for 30 days, including the PDF record and evidence uploads.
